Now Is A ‘Good Time’ To Insulate Homes

Now Is A Good Time To Insulate HomesNow could be an excellent time for homeowners to consider insulating their walls and lofts, an industry expert has stated.

According to Andrew Leech, technical consultant for the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), getting such work carried out during the winter months could particularly help consumers save money that they would have otherwise spent on heating bills. In turn, applying for a homeowner loan could be one way in which to fund such a project.

He said: “I think now is a good time, let alone whether it’s winter or not, to insulate your property, because it’s something that should be there all year round. You shouldn’t just be thinking about it now, at winter… it’s the sort of thing you ought to do in any case. There’s not just loft insulation - there’s cavity wall insulation if you’ve got cavities and that can save a vast amount of energy from a house.”

The NHIC consultant added that having loft and cavity wall insulation put into place can reduce energy usage by about 33 per cent. In turn, this could see homeowners make dramatic savings on their utility bills, which could help them meet other demands on their spending such as mortgages, personal loans and credit cards.

Mr Leech reported that an increasing number of Britons are considering carrying out the insulation of their lofts themselves. He claimed that doing so can be “tedious” and is “not an easy job” due to the need for homeowners to take out all the items stored in such rooms before laying down the insulation. However, the consultant suggested that it is possible for people to do this work on their own “and save money as well”. In turn, this could help consumers to avoid the cost of hiring professionals to do such work. Whether or not they choose to do such a project themselves, a home loan could still help many to finance such renovations.

He also claimed that for those looking to reduce the pressure that heating bills puts on their finances, draught proofing is “the most effective method” in which to improve the insulation of a property. Again for those aiming to cut down on their expenditure, which might be financed via a low rate loan, the NHIC consultant pointed out that homeowners could be able to get such work done themselves. He advised that there are some “really good brands of draught-proofing on the market now”. Doing a typical semi-detached home would take a full day, although Mr Leech suggested that having this work done will benefit people in the long run.

As a result, Britons looking to improve their property may wish to consider applying for a homeowner loan to help finance such work. Earlier this year, research conducted by AA indicated that about a fifth of consumers have carried out work on their homes in a bid to make more space and to boost its value. It was reported that a total of 90 billion pounds is spent on converting homes and a cheap homeowner loan may prove an ideal way to fund such work.
